So, we had quite a scare yesterday.
Dad was fine on Friday when he was checked by the doctor before his radiation. Saturday and Sunday, he was off – not eating much, very little fluids, and you could just see this down hill in his overall health. By Sunday night, we had decided to get him to the doctor Monday morning. He was too weak to walk to the car, so an ambulance was called.
It was very serious.
When we got to the ER, he kept saying that he wasn’t going to make it, giving instructions to us, etc.
They immediately put him on fluids and started running tests.
Throughout the day he became more alert, lucid, talkative, and at the same time, continued to talk with us about what he wanted. Yesterday wasn’t a good day for us at all. Dad, on the other hand was completely at peace – no tears, no worry, just ready for everything to be done. He was certain that he would go, and yet, here we are today.
The tests revealed that he has either another case of Pneumonia, or the same one that hasn’t completely gone away. He will remain in the hospital over the next few days on heavy antibiotics. Also, they are going to cut back his steroids because apparently they inhibit the body’s ability to resist infection. He will resume the radiation tomorrow (he has seven to go!).
(insert big sigh of relief here).
I took my computer up last night and was able to share with him all the “Love Dave” pictures that have been sent in so far. It was so awesome to see the expression on his face – watching him realize (and I know this is a small sample) of how many people across the country are rooting for him, loving him, and praying for him.
